Melanotan 2 also known as Melanotan II or MT-2, is a synthetic variant of a hormone that stimulates melanogenesis, a process which darkens pigmentation. This peptide hormone, which is called an alpha-Melanocyte stimulating hormone or MSH, is used to activate melanocortin receptors.
MT-2 is an analog of the peptide hormone alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone. It has been shown to have aphrodisiac properties which increase libido. Also, MT-2 is a cyclic heptapeptide analog of the alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (a-MSH).
(a-MSH) Melanocyte-stimulating hormone is a naturally occuring endogenous melanotan peptide hormone of the melanocortin family, which has been proven to be the most important of the melanocyte-stimulating hormones when talking about stimulating melanogenesis.
